This workshop will provide an in-depth look at the 2012 NC Residential Energy Code, different strategies to show compliance, and a review of building science. The focus of the workshop will be on the changes required in insulation, fenestration, air sealing, and lighting. Diagnostic testing options will be reviewed and demonstrated, as well as when it is required to meet compliance. An energy code visual library will be shown with new photos from job sites across the state of compliant and non-compliant practices, along with advanced framing options.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the scope of the residential energy code and climate zones.
  2. Determine the best path for compliance for different projects.
  3. Review the importance of a tight building envelope, what the energy code requires in terms of air sealing and the different ways to show compliance.
  4. Understand insulation and fenestration tables and code related requirements.
  5. Review the new lighting requirements for residential construction.
  6. Learn the duct sealing and insulation requirements as well as the different options for compliance in regards to the tightness of the duct system.
  7. Participants will be introduced to the additional voluntary criteria (HERO code), the reasons to go above and beyond the minimum code, and code resources.
