The 2015 Sustainability Symposium and Expo is set to ignite enthusiasm about sustainability, innovation, and entrepreneurship by pouring fresh ideas into a room full of motivated leaders.
The purpose of this conference is to share information on regional planning, energy and communication projects that will impact how Brunswick County’s grows; identify types of business funding sources and entrepreneurial opportunities; and how companies are tying sustainability practices with increasing the bottom line and triggering innovation.
Among the keynote speakers and plenary session activities we have invited this year: John Janes, Marketing Supervisor at Caterpillar Inc. and current Caterpillar lead professional to the US Compost Council. As part of his responsibilities he interfaces with the sustainable market places in the US and Canada to include composting, the green industries and adverse weather relief services. John has been with Caterpillar since 2006 and for Caterpillar has worked in a variety of locales to include Singapore, Australia, Peru, Chile and South Africa. John has earned degrees in engineering from NCSU and business from Duke University. John's presentation will center on Caterpillar's Approach to Sustainability - Building a Better world and how sustainability drives innovation at Caterpillar.
Teresa Carter is the Onslow County Tourism Director. During her tenure she has started many different programs, events, and partnerships – the Hospitality Training with NC Cooperative Extension, the Service Rewards Program with area businesses, the Arties with area festivals, and the Green Sustainability Program with the Hotel/Motel Association. She serves on several boards – NCF&EA, Brigade Boys & Girls Club, New River Roundtable, and NC Coast Host.
And Tom Rhodes who is the Program Manager for NC GreenTravel Initiative and Environmental Specialist with the North Carolina Division of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service. He has a 27 year background in sustainability, having developed two local government recycling programs and serving on the DEACS Local Government Assistance Team. In addition to his role as grant administrator and consultant to local government sustainability programs, Tom manages the NC GreenTravel Initiative recognition program for sustainable destinations. They will be giving a glimpse into how a tourism director partnered with state, county, city, hotels, and local businesses to spark an interest in sustainability, and the business opportunities in Sustainable Tourism.
Scott Maitland, is currently the Proprietor of Top of the Hill Distillery – makers of TOPO Vodka, Gin and Whiskey – and currently the only exclusively organic and all-local distillery in the South; and Top of the Hill Restaurant & Brewery who has won over 40 “Best Of” awards in the Triangle; is the largest bar in the state of North Carolina, and one of only six breweries in the world with three platinum medals from the World Beer Championships. Scott sees entrepreneurship as essential to the future prosperity of rural, small and mid-sized communities. Scott will be speaking about how craft spirits Industry Integrate Sustainability in their day-to-day operations.
In addition to the plenary sessions there will be 12 breakout sessions divided in four tracks: Sustainable Development, Innovation, Entrepreneurial Opportunities, and Renewable Energy.
