The Lug-A-Jug event is sponsored by the 501(c)(3) nonprofit, United Solar Initiative (USI), whose mission is to empower underdeveloped communities with solar energy solutions. Recently, USI has gained a partnership with World Vision, the largest non-government provider of clean water. USI has been tasked to install solar panels on 100 World Vision water pumps, with 10 installations in 10 dierent countries. These pumps are placed in communities across Sub-Saharan Africa, as a local solution for individuals who travel on average 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) a day to find clean drinking water. These individuals, often women and children, are usually unable to attend school or get a job but instead spend many hours of their day fetching water. This dependable and clean source of energy will power the distribution of clean drinking water to on average, 800 individuals per pump.

The Lug-A-Jug event will not only raise money for these installations, but raise awareness of the condition of these water scarce communities. Teams of 6-10 people will carry one 5 gallon jug filled with water for the duration of the race, just as many individuals in third world countries take this journey everyday to find and provide clean drinking water for their families. Teams will be tasked to finish the race as quickly as possible, without letting their jugs touch the ground or spilling any water in the process.
