NCSEA at ASHRAE 2014 Annual Conference June 28-July 2 in Seattle

NCSEA conducted a consumer survey in 2012 to investigate the motivations and the economic feasibility of ground source heat pumps (GSHP) in North Carolina. The survey assessed system location, installed cost, itemized cost, maintenance cost, installation date, and square footage of heated and cooled space of 453 responses from system owners. The Economic Analysis of Ground Source Heat Pumps in North Carolina study analyzed these metrics to assess the importance of rebates and tax credits for GSHP to be economically viable. This study will be presented at the ASHRAE 2014 Annual Conference. For more information about the conference, click here.

Legislative Update:

Poll Shows NC Voters Continue to Support Clean Energy

For the fourth year in a row, NCSEA partnered with Fallon Research to do a statewide public opinion survey on energy issues. This year’s survey included 803 registered North Carolina voters and was conducted March 23-27. It was not surprising to us that 83 percent of respondents think state leaders and elected officials should seek more renewable energy sources to provide consumers and businesses with affordable energy. Also, support for individual clean energy technologies is high across all political affiliations. Stay tuned for the full survey release on Thursday, May 22.

Regulatory Roundup:

Cost Recovery Docket Update

NCSEA pre-filed testimony in Duke Energy Carolina's (DEC) Application for Approval of Demand-Side Management and Energy Efficiency (DSM/EE) Cost Recovery Rider to recommend that the Commission to direct DEC to continue stakeholder and collaborative discussions of the potential, opportunities, and barriers of combined heat and power (CHP) as an energy efficiency measure. NCSEA also pre-filed testimony in DEC's Application for Fuel and Fuel-Related Charge Adjustments to encourage the Commission to incorporation risk-aware regulation to proactively seek to identify, understand and minimize the risks involved in a specific decision. This approach could be utilized in DEC's proposed natural gas hedging strategy to enhance resource diversity (such as wind, solar, biomass) with DEC's supply portfolio to minimize the fuel cost risk associated with natural gas.

NCSEA Needs Your Energy Efficiency Success Stories

The NC Sustainable Energy Association is looking for examples of successful projects that have been completed under the 2012 NC Energy Conservation Code, which can be used to educate the NC General Assembly, the Governor’s Office, the NC Building Code Council, and other involved stakeholders. Our goal is to illustrate that energy efficient buildings are cost competitive when long term energy and financial savings are considered.

If you have a project that has been completed since the code went into effect in January 2012 and has achieved substantial energy and financial savings, please email and we will call you directly to get your story. Thank you for your success stories!
