Celebrating Clean Energy Powered Businesses in North Carolina
There are more than 1,600 business-owned renewable energy projects in North Carolina, including many of our state’s largest employers. Companies across our state and nation are making significant investments in clean energy-renewable energy, energy conservation, electric vehicles and energy storage-to help them save money, deliver greater predictability to their energy bills, and meet their customers’ expectations. Since 2008, corporatiions have announced power purchase agreements (PPAs) for nearly 200 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind energy projects, which includes a record breaking 46 GW of renewable energy in 2023 alone. To put this total corporate procurement in perspective, this is over five times the total amount of renewable energy currently installed in North Carolina. We salute these companies for their clean energy adoption and leadership!
More than 400 companies in the United States and around the world have committed to power their operations with 100% renewable energy, including these 109 companies with facilities, operations, and employees in North Carolina:

"Our evolving sustainability and conservation efforts at SAS headquarters and our global offices include a 2050 net-zero carbon emissions goal and validated, science-based emission reduction targets. With sustainable initiatives ranging from energy conservation, beehives and solar projects to our green buildings and smart campus technology, we also use our expertise and software to help customers develop smarter operations and green business strategies."
Dr. Jim Goodnight, Co-Founder & CEO of SAS
Learn more"With a focus on optimizing sustainability in its own production processes, Novozymes has a global goal of halving its CO2 emissions by 2030, which includes switching to the use of 100% renewable electricity for its operations. We have ambitious goals, we are proud of our progress, and we hope that our efforts will encourage other companies to do the same. However, as an organization, we can also do more by supporting market-based policies that make it easier for companies to directly source renewable electricity – and together secure more sustainable manufacturing."
Brian Brazeau, President for North America, Novozymes
"Becoming the first regional U.S.-based commercial bank to achieve carbon neutrality demonstrates Fifth Third's unequivocal commitment to environmental sustainability leadership in the financial services industry. Achieving and maintaining carbon neutrality ensures that our operations minimize impact to the environment and is beneficial to all our stakeholders."
Greg Carmichael, Chairman, President & CEO, Fifth Third Bank
Learn more"Fifth Third is making history. They were the first [RE100] member company to contact for 100% solar power and are demonstrating that renewables make business sense. By adding clean power to America's electricity grid, they're accelerating a cleaner future for us all – and leading the way for other companies to follow suit."
Amy Davidsen, Executive Director, North America, The Climate Group
"It is critical that we leverage all parts of our business – beyond our direct operations – in order to accelerate the transition to a net-zero global economy. We recognize that this will be no easy task, but we believe our commitment will help spur the growth of zero carbon energy and power solutions, sustainable transportation and agriculture, and other sector transformations, while generating more climate-resilient and equitable opportunities for our future."
Anne Finucace, Vice Chairman, Bank of America
Learn more"At Target, we're committed to making our operations even more sustainable to create a better future for our guests, team members, and the planet. Ambitious energy goals have helped us accelerate our progress and reach major milestones. And we'll continue to invest in technologies, partners, and resources to help us achieve even more."
John Leisen, Vice President of Property Management, Target
"At the beginning of the year, we achieved our ambition of sourcing 100% renewable power in our global production when a new solar facility went online powering our entire US operations. In the process, we became the first pharmaceutical company in the renewable power initiative, RE100, to do this. In 2020, the energy consumption for our operations was 3,191,000 GJ, an increase of 7% compared with 2019, primarily due to a new production site in North Carolina. Energy-saving projects implemented in 2020 within production sites are expected to result in annual savings of 94,000 GJ"
Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen President & Chief Executive Officer, Novo Nordisk
